Our Alpaca Story
The idea of alpacas and alpaca farming came to me from a friend in the spring of 2006. She was going to an alpaca farm in our county to write an article on the joys of raising alpacas. I was intrigued by the idea of alpacas in Florida! The alpaca idea kept returning to me, so I began to research alpacas and alpaca breeding. Was it possible to be successful at alpaca farming in our area? Was our 38 acres a good place for an alpaca farm? The more I researched alpacas, the more the answer turned out to be a resounding YES. My husband Steve and I went on our first alpaca farm visit in March of 2007. We were both captivated by the alpacas and by their owners, who spent three hours with us, teaching us all about alpaca farming. After two more alpaca farm visits, we were sold, and began to plan for our own alpaca farming adventure to begin. The summer of 2007 was spent building a barn and fencing pastures. In October we were ready to bring our first group of alpacas home. What a thrill it was to introduce that first group to their new home! We decided to raise suri alpacas on our farm, and to specialize in breeding superior quality suri alpacas that thrive in the Florida climate. Our alpaca farm has grown since then to include fourteen beautiful suri alpacas. We have found alpaca farming to be everything that we could have hoped for. Learning about raising alpacas and breeding alpacas that are gentically superior animals is a fascinating adventure, filled with helpful and experienced alpaca breeders who want to help new breeders succeed. As we gain experience and knowlege, we hope to help others get started in the alpaca farming business and suceed at raising and breeding alpacas.
